A sudden gust puts Astra's lee deck under |
Marine pictures by Herefordshire-based painter Martin Lamport. These paintings are inspired by sailing and traveling experiences, using conditions and locations I have witnessed and subjects which caught my imagination. Some have stories attached. Some are merely for fun. They probably do not satisfy any modern definition of art. I just strive for craftsmanship. Taking my inspiration from the Mad Hatter I paint what I like and I like what I paint. I hope you do too.

On 1 June 1794 the Brunswick engaged Le Vengeur in the Battle of the Glorious 1st June. Both ship's were dismasted and Capt' Harvey was killed. When the hat was shot off the figurehead depicting the Duke of Brunswick the sailors nailed the Captain's hat to it, so his Grace would not go into action bareheaded. I have chosen the opening of the engagement when the Brunswick is manoeuvring to cut the French line.
